This week we would like to highlight KKV’S involvement in the community. Jon has been a member of a grass roots program called Local Area Advisory Council for the past 1 ½ years. LAAC is a government program designed to empower local citizens. The purpose of the training is to educate Council members about the Children’s Act. All this week the training has been going on, and KKV has been represented. We are one of only a few orphanages in this area who are involved.
Some of the issues addressed are: child labor, child abuse, child trafficking and child prostitution. These issues are more prevalent in lower income and slum areas. There have been several deaths per year due to parents locking their children up at home so they could work and a fire breaks out. LAAC gives a forum to empower citizens to act to try to prevent this and other forms of child abuse. It is an honor to be part of a group of like-minded people who are passionate about helping vulnerable children.
On a sad note, this week at chapel we said goodbye to teacher Monica, who is leaving KKV staff to serve in a ministry that she has been a part of since its inception. She has served with us since 2005, and has been a mentor as well as teacher to many of our kids. Her caring heart, spirit of excellence and godly example will be greatly missed. Even though it is difficult to release her, we are very excited to see all that God has in store for her.
